WITH a list of famous men who did it the old way.
“ Country Lawyers ”

  • Patrick Henry (1736-1799), member of the Continental Congress, governor of Virginia;
  • John Jay (1745-1829), first chief justice of the Supreme Court;
  • John Marshall (1755-1835), chief justice of the Supreme Court;
  • William Wirt (1772-1834), attorney general;
  • Roger B. Taney (1777-1864), secretary of the treasury, chief justice of the Supreme Court;
  • Daniel Webster (1782-1852), secretary of state;
  • Salmon P. Chase (1808-1873), senator, chief justice of the Supreme Court;
  • Abraham Lincoln (1809-1865), president; Illinois
  • Stephen Douglas (1813-1861), representative, senator from Illinois;
  • Clarence Darrow (1857-1938), defense attorney in Scopes trial of 1925. [ Darrow went to law school for one year,
                 and preferred to study law on his own.
                 He received most of his legal education in a law office in Youngstown, Ohio.
         +  Scopes Monkey Trial:  High school teacher John Thomas Scopes was charged w/ violating Tennessee's law against
             teaching Evolution instead of the "divine creation of man".
         +  The trial was the first to be broadcasted on live radio.
         +  Judge Raulston destroyed the defense’s strategy by
                ruling that expert scientific testimony on evolution was inadmissible,
                on the grounds that it was Scopes who was on trial, not the law he had violated.
         +  The next day, Raulston ordered the trial moved to the courthouse lawn, fearing that
                the weight of the crowd inside was in danger of collapsing the floor.
         +  The TN law would stand for another 42 years. But Clarence Darrow and the ACLU
                 had succeeded in publicizing scientific evidence for evolution,
                 and the press reported that though Bryan had won the case, he had lost the argument.
         +  The verdict did have a chilling effect on teaching evolution in the classroom, however,
                 and not until the 1960s did evolution reappear in schoolbooks.
