"Native American involvement in American slavery
Underground Railroad is affirmed on this date in 1722."
1802, President Jefferson mused about how to extinguish Indian land title. He wrote,
"There is perhaps no method more irresistible of obtaining lands from [Indians]
than by letting them get in debt, which when too heavy to be paid, they are always willing to lop off by a cession of land."
Treaties (& continuous breaches.... for gold)
1874 Gold Rush-> 1980: The Supreme Court found the United States guilty for basically
land misappropriation (stealing) the Black Hills (S.D.), ordered a money payment to the Sioux.
1980: The Sioux tribes responded that the Black Hills are not for sale.
"Manifest destiny" was the "justification" for near genocide of all Native Americans,
placing them into desert & swamp areas, where they would not be able to regroup themselves,
1962: Native Americans didn't get the right to vote in every state until 1962.
Federal recognition:
2016: In 400 yrs, NO VA tribes "Federally recognized".
The *very* first tribe contacted in the Americas,
Pocahontas' Pamunkey tribe was forced
*multiple* tries of 15-30 yr attempts to become "Federally recognized".
Who blocked their last attempt?
We hope there is now.
(Ironically, THIS site used to do more Native American Stories than *any* other News Media Outlet.
They are now being shuttered.)
Six other Virginia tribes are seeking recognition through an act of Congress
(instead of awaiting hundreds of yrs for an "honorable" action).
The Tonto Apache
(Dilzhe) are one of the groups of Western Apache people.
The Spanish derived their use of Tonto ("loose", "foolish") for the group.
The kindred but enemy Navajo to the north called both, the Tonto Apache and their allies,
the Yavapai, Dilzh din'i' - People with high-pitched voices).

If you harbored an Indian, when reservation death marches started,
you could be fined, prosecuted, jailed, even your property taken by the State.

Oak Flat, AZ
Oak Flat is the Apache holy ground that
Senator McCain helped Resolution Copper Co. get control of at the end of 2014;
Oak Flat is part of Arizona Tonto National Forest, and the Apache have used it for generations in young women's coming-of-age ceremonies.
1955: President Dwight Eisenhower removed it from consideration for mining activities in recognition of its natural and cultural value.
2009 (February 11) AZ Senators Jon Kyl and John McCain introduced S. 409, the
Southeast Arizona Land Exchange and Conservation Act of 2009. This Bill follows five unsuccessful attempts by Senator Kyl to pass similar special interest Bills
2014 (December), during the final days of Congress, Sens. John McCain (R-Ariz.) and Jeff Flake (R-Ariz.)
added a rider to the must-pass National Defense Authorization Act that opened the land to mining conglomerates Rio Tinto and BHP Billiton.
McCain's campaign fund:
WASHINGTON Apache protesters completed their cross-country journey from the San Carlos reservation in Arizona to Washington, D.C., with a Wednesday rally on the lawn of the Capitol building, protesting Congress' sale of their sacred Oak Flat to foreign mining conglomerates.
Congressman Gosar
Claims Oak Flat Has Never Been a Sacred Site, Wants to Kick Out Apache Stronghold Protesters
Oak Flat contains abundant evidence that the Apache have been here since well before recorded history,
according to congressional testimony by the Society for American Archaeology.
If Oak Flat were a Christian holy site, or for that matter Jewish or Muslim,
no senator who wished to remain in office would dare to sneak a backdoor deal for its destruction
into a spending bill no matter what mining-company profits or jobs might result.
But this is Indian religion.
Clearly the Arizona congressional delegation isn't afraid of a couple of million conquered natives.
The deal is an impressive new low in congressional corruption, unworthy of our country's ideals no matter what side of the aisle you're on. It's exactly the kind of cynical maneuvering that has taught the electorate to disrespect politicians
Adriano Tsinigine: Met Mr. McCain, and asked for a photo, then I pulled out my 'Protect Oak Flat' card
and when he seen it, he looked me right in the eye and said "Get out of here, now!"

Gov. Corruption?
If any gov. agency can find a shortcut to pad their pocket (w/o supervision), greed kicks in.
- 1997 IRS whistleblower, Jennifer Long (16 yr agent for IRS), exposed a Quota for "abusively auditing small homeowners, seizing & selling homes"
- CPS, as a kidnap agency for $4-6,000 profit per child: GA Senator (who was found with her husband, in their home, shot to death)
- 1974: Walter Mondale stated that after CAPTA passed it would turn child protection into a child snatching business.
- In 1974, CAPTA (Child Abuse Prevention and Treatment Act) was introduced to provide financial assistance for a demonstration program for the prevention, identification, and treatment of child abuse and neglect.
- 1997: President Clinton passed the Adoption and Safe Families Act to promote the adoption of children in foster care."
- The legislation soon turned the operation into a $12 billion a YEAR business.
Tecumseh (in Shawnee, meaning "Shooting Star" or "Panther Across The Sky)(1768 - 1813)
that did the best job of organizing Native Americans
& almost reached his goal of uniting almost all tribes into a unified force,
to ensure a TRUE treaty.
"No tribe has the right to sell [land], even to each other, much less to strangers ...
Sell a country!? Why not sell the air, the great sea, as well as the earth? Didn't the Great Spirit make them all for the use of his children?"
"The only way to stop this evil [loss of land] is for the red man to unite in claiming a common and equal right in the land, as it was first, and should be now, for it was never divided."
Tecumseh's Confederacy opposed the United States during Tecumseh's War & became an ally of Britain in the War of 1812.
Late 1820's (Dahlonega, Georgia) The 1st major gold strike in North America
was the impetus for the Indian Removal Act (1830) & led to the Trail of Tears.
The California Gold Rush (1848-1855)(esp. the '49'ers )
The Black Hills Gold Rush (Dakotas) (1874 Custer Expedition - 1877)
Yukon/Klondike Gold Rush (1896 - 1899) Canada & their tribes' decimation
Geronimo (Goyahkla "The one who yawns" Chiricahua Apache) (1829 - 1909)
Mexicans often invoked St. Jerome (Geronimo) during attacks. The name stuck.
While trading across the AZ/ Mexican mountains, Mexican troops slaughtered their base camp; His mother, wife, & his 3 children were among the dead. This started an escalating revenge warpath over decades.
BEFORE Gold-Rush treaty violations (& deaths), raids were just stealing supplies to survive, when they could not trade. Warpaths were to revenge deaths.
When pushed into reservations, 3 major times, he had his people stockpile supplies,
& pulled raids, staying in the high mountain ranges his tribe were trained to run through, since early children.
Into his SIXTIES, he & his band ran up to 90 (NINETY) miles per Day, when not riding.
Male record holders (current days): 100 miles (to Auburn, CA): 15 hrs. (20.5 hrs for the 60-69 age-group record holder)
Geronimo, went from hated & feared,
to an American icon, when he got the chance to tell his tribes' story to a few writers.
